The Information and Cultural Affairs Department of Government of West Bengal organises the event to nominate and reward the best pujas, throughout the world, thereby highlighting the core concept of Biswa Bangla.

September 15, 2017, Kolkata: Calcutta, the second-biggest city of India, is indeed a festival called life. From the morsel of its germination, the city has been a cluster of emotion to celebrate the vision of human imagination. Calcutta as well as Bengal is the vivid and cacophonic, and refined and desperate spirit that dwells in the blend of its culture, language, festivals, heritage designs, fine living & dining, streets bubbling with life, spiritual sites of Bengali renaissance, engineering marvels from the dawn of modern time, and spurt of the new generation & infrastructure in the cradles of its colonial and traditional past which is as vibrant as an epic.
Durga Puja is undoubtedly the greatest festival of the Bengali people. It elucidates the win of the good over the negativity. It’s not only a religious celebration but also holds a unique tradition and cultural heritage. As you tread through the dusky beauty that grew from the villages of Sutanuti, Govindpore, and Kalikata, which used to stretch from the present day Coolie Bazaar, Prinsep’s Ghat on south to Jora Bagan Ghat, Chitpore towards the north, time will unfold itself in the spirit of the city that whispers its untold sagas of two millennia. In other words, the best way to experience Durga Puja is by visiting the many different pandals of Goddess Durga, each with a new theme.
However, Biswa Bangla Sharad Samman (BBSS) started in 2013, is an event to recognise and appreciate the brilliance and innovation in organising Durga Puja. It is a unique event which attracts local, national and international participation in an immensely healthy competition for the excellence in creativity. This unique initiative involves Baroari (Community) pujas from Kolkata, districts of West Bengal, other states of India and even from foreign countries to participate and get honoured for their innovative ideas about idols, pandals, ambience, artistry and environment.
