Signs and symptoms that can be seen in a person affected by acne are blackhead (small black or yellowish bumps that are developed on the skin), whiteheads, papules (red bumps that feel tender or sore), pustules (similar to papules but it has white tip in the center), nodules, and cysts.

Causes:

It runs in the family. A person inherits this condition from his/her family members.

It has been researched and estimated that 80% of women is caused by acne mainly due to change in hormones due to periods, or pregnancy.

It is also caused by the factors such as overproduction of oil substances (sebum), building up of bacteria, certain medications such as corticosteroids, lithium, or androgens.

Treatments:

Self-help techniques such as washing hands and face daily and regularly, using own clean towels and clothes, wash hair regularly, avoid using too mush make-up and cosmetics help to prevent from getting affected by acne and other skin diseases.

Using Over-the-Counter (OTC) topical treatments which are vital to dry the oil, kill the bacteria, and dead skin cells. These include benzoyl peroxide, resorcinol, sulfur, and salicylic acid. Acne can be treated by using antibiotic (oral) tablets but pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised to take antibiotic called erythromycin.

Isotretinoin has a number of beneficial effects as it helps to normalize sebum, reduces redness and swelling in and around spots, and decreases amount of bacteria on the skin. Cosmetic procedures like comdone extractor, chemical peels, and photodynamic therapy are also helpful to cure acne.
