Why Help The Homeless? A Discussion with Attorney Juleigh Sitton

Posted August 9, 2016 by Juleighsitton

Many people across the world are homeless. They depend on the privileged like me and you giving our extra resources and time in order to make their lives better.

The smallest gesture can change a homeless person’s day. A smile, a few coins in a cup. Making eye contact with destitute individuals in recognition of their shared humanity. Juleigh Sitton, formerly of Asheville, North Carolina, believes helping the homeless is something every privileged, stable person should be doing on a semi-regular basis. According to the United Nations, almost one hundred million people across the world have nowhere to live. Many are women and children.

Juleigh Sitton’s career is fueled by the desire to help individuals and business with their legal troubles and find permanent solutions. She thinks all lawyers should offer their legal expertise and perform some Pro bono work. Before moving to Vietnam to work as a teacher, Sitton was a member of the local Trinity Episcopal Church, which works with the community-building “Room in the Inn” program that provides homeless women housing in actual churches. The attorney has slept in churches with homeless women, driven the bus and assisted in running “Room in the Inn’s” overall operation, especially on the legal side.

Juleigh Sitton assures that you can get involved, too. If you are truly willing, it is not difficult to find opportunities to be charitable.

Volunteer at your local, church-based program. There is someone helping the poor in every American community. You just have to know where to look. A Google search isn’t the worst idea. As a volunteer, you will learn from those already making a difference on how to be effective. Don’t hesitate inviting friends and family to join you as well.

Juleigh Sitton also asks to show basic respect. The homeless are vulnerable and it is important to uplift them and help restore their dignity. When you talk with a destitute person, do it gently and with decency. While it is wise to exercise caution when reaching out to the homeless – because they are in a state of intense vulnerability and their perception of reality may be unjustly damaged – your effort will be more effective by showing respect toward the real person.

Juleigh Sitton believes all privileged people should be cheerful givers. Instead of directly donating money, purchase foodstuffs, supplies and clothing for soup kitchens and shelters. Helping the homeless has made Sitton a better lawyer, mother and person.
