For the first time in 2017, viewers in Germany will spend a greater amount of time viewing online than watching television. This shift can be attributed to the migration of more viewing content to various streaming platforms.

Viewers older than 18 years of age are set to spend approximately 3 hours and 44 minutes, excluding call times, per day using a laptop, PC or mobile device. The same people will view television an average of 6 minutes less than this estimate.

“Use of the Internet has risen in Germany in recent years,” said an analyst at JSW Corporation. “There has been a shift in viewing patterns as more content becomes available online and a greater portion of the population, including the elderly, become comfortable with viewing in this manner.”

The change in viewing behavior is certainly being felt by time-honored media firms such as Bertelsmann SE’s RTL Group SA and ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE, which are focusing on developing an increase in digital offerings in an attempt to battle competitors like Netflix Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. for viewers.

Also for the first time in Germany, in 2016, adults will use mobile devices more than computers for surfing and internet use, echoing the trend in the United Kingdom this year.

Germany boasts the most internet users in Europe, more than 63 million, and that number is set to increase as more and more senior citizens familiarize themselves with the internet and its many uses.
