Guyanese business professional, Joshua Safeek, has spent most of his life working to improve the economy and society in his home country of Guyana. In recent years, he was acknowledged for his efforts in creating the West Demerara Chamber of Commerce.

Working with the Chamber of Commerce organization is something near and dear to Safeek's heart. In previous years, he served as the President of the ARCC, the Association of Chambers of Commerce. This umbrella organization oversaw a total of eight different Guyanese Chambers of Commerce in the country. The ARCC is headquartered in Georgetown.

The purpose of a Chamber of Commerce office is to promote the growth of local and small businesses while offering better services to the citizens. Organizations that are focused on the little business owner rather than the corporate conglomerate are far and few between, which is why Joshua Safeek worked so hard to have the West Demerara branch opened.

Guyana is a country that relies heavily on international trade and small international businesses with local offices. Having the ability and resources to support those local companies filters money and products directly back into the Guyana economy. This is a win-win situation for all involved.

More than one hundred thousand people live in the Essequibo Islands in the region known as West Demerara. That makes for quite a few businesses that did not have needed community support until the opening of the Chamber of Commerce.

A Chamber of Commerce does far more than hold monthly meetings. These organizations offer sounding boards for business owners and society members, opportunities to speak with leading experts in many fields, and representation with the local and federal government. A Chamber of Commerce also serves to organize events and trade shows which allow smaller businesses with low marketing budgets to display their products or services.

As a Guyana native with strong community ties, Joshua Safeek plans to continue his work with the ARCC and many Chambers of Commerce in the country. His hope is that local citizens, normal men and women, will financially benefit from a growth in small business in the area.
