If you are planning a visit to the popular hot-spot that lies on the coast of South Africa, exploring the top Cape Town attractions is more than likely on your list of things to do once you arrive.

You may already know about some of the most popular attractions here – especially with travel brochures and guidebooks that feature scenes of the majestic Table Mountain, vast oceans, pristine beaches and the vibrant Waterfront with its harbour setting. Alongside these obvious must-see landmarks however, there are a number of other attractions to look out for when you begin exploring the area.

Some of the most important landmarks that no visitor can afford to miss include the following:

1. Table Mountain – this huge mountain takes its name from its flat top, and the clouds that roll over the mountain are fondly called its tablecloth. As the defining landmark of the city, the mountain offers spectacular views from every area within Cape Town. The cable car is a great way to venture up to the top, while there are also many guided hikes from various sides.

2. V&A Waterfront – a popular tourist hub, the Waterfront comprises a bustling harbour, world-class shopping centre, restaurants, bars, amphitheatre (where live music is performed on a regular basis), boat cruise operators, craft markets, children’s activities, Mineral World Scratch Patch and the renowned Two Oceans Aquarium. This ensures a full day of fun, whatever the season.

3. Camps Bay – flanked by the Twelve Apostles Mountains on the one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other side, Camps Bay offers a trendy stretch of main road in between that is dotted with luxury villas, sidewalk cafes, bars, high-end shops, palm trees and restaurants. This is where the elite come to play, with access to some of the best beaches in the world.

4. City Centre – the eclectic mix of building styles, cultures, nationalities, people and places make the City Centre one of the most fascinating parts of Cape Town. Here you will find beautiful buildings dating back to the 1800s, lying alongside modern shopping centres, African curio stores, antique shops, restaurants serving every cuisine under the sun, open-air markets, food vendors and the energetic Long Street.

5. Cape Point – on the other end of the peninsula lies the nature reserve of Cape Point. The drive to this reserve takes you along a stretch of main road that follows the coast, with many places to stop along the way. Kalk Bay and Simons Town are both worth exploring, while the penguin colony at Boulders Beach is also a must-see en route to Cape Point. Once you arrive, you will find endless stretches of fynbos, rugged coastlines and incredible views.
The best way to take in all of these highlights along with the myriad other things to see is to take your time exploring. This will ensure that you see the many Cape Town top attractions that are found across the city.
