One of the biggest questions people seem to want to know when it comes to Information Technology is; what is ITIL, and more commonly what is it used for? The best possible answer to this question is to take it separately. First, ITIL is an acronym for Information Technology Infrastructure Library. ITIL provides a framework for best practice framework for IT service management.

If you find yourself asking; what is ITIL, then you obviously have a need to know more about it. ITIL and IT Infrastructure Library are trademarks of the United Kingdom. Originally they came under the department of OCG, or the Office of Government Commerce. This department has since become part of the Cabinet Office, therefore the two trademarks are now registered under HM Government.
So, what is ITIL used for? Companies use ITIL to improve IT services, provide services that are fit for use and fit for purpose use ITIL.

ITIL continues to evolve at a rapid pace, as does everything associated with Information and Technology. As the world becomes more and more dependent on IT resources the need for more frameworks similar in style and design will become necessary. People will eventually stop asking; what is ITIL, and start asking how they can use the frmework to their advantage. It has become very useful in the United Kingdom, cataloging all the necessary information regarding IT service management under one simple heading.

ITIL has seen a number of updates since its earliest inception, which is necessary in order to accommodate an ever changing and evolving IT system. Now when somebody asks; what is ITIL, there are a number of different answers one could provide, depending on which version or edition was being asked about. The latest version known as ITIL 2011 is the most current and updated resource available at this time. The 2012 version should be available in the near future.
