HIPAA compliance is now mandated by the Department of Health and Human Services. Any business creating, storing or sharing health information must audit their information systems and internal policies to meet HIPAA compliance. HIPAA compliance software has been introduced to allow businesses to meet the standards that are currently in place. HIPAA compliance software allows businesses to audit their information systems without the assistance of a third party.

In order to meet standards for compliance, HIPAA regulated businesses must show that their electronically stored patient health information isn't at significant risk. Risks include loss of data from environmental sources such as natural disasters, unauthorized access to data from both internal and external sources and unnecessary sharing of patient health information with entities such as billing companies. Medical organizations, insurance companies and other organizations and entities must each prove and document their compliance with HIPAA guidelines or face penalties.

To reach compliance, HIPAA regulated businesses must prove information is created, stored and transmitted securely. Most HIPAA compliance software includes web-based storage for businesses to store prevent data loss. Any business using HIPAA compliance software to store electronic patient health information or billing information must use software and storage companies that are HIPAA compliant. System monitoring is an important aspect of reaching compliance. HIPAA regulations state that you must document who has accessed patient information in your organization and beyond.

HIPAA compliance software should have the ability to monitor who and when electronic patient health information is accessed. An access log should be reviewed by a designated, authorized person in your organization on a regular basis. Software designed for compliance with HIPAA standards will not only monitor and record access to patient health information, but will also provide encryption when patient health information is moved from one electronic location to another.
