It is important to seek the services of a qualified naturopath Sydney with specialised training in methylation for any MTHFR gene mutation or methylation cycle issue.

Methylation issues can cause a wide range of health conditions including anxiety, depression, headaches, migraines, stroke, heart attack, infertility, miscarriage and cancer.

Methylation is involved in liver detoxification of neurotransmitters and hormones, DNA & RNA replication, immune function, energy production, histamine degradation, production of phosphatidylcholine which is an important component of cell membranes and myelin.

The Methylation pathways rely on adequate amounts of B group vitamins, particularly vitamin B12. It also relies on folate, methionine, choline and zinc. Methylation also requires proper gut function for absorption and utilization of these important nutrients.

An important enzyme in the methylation process is the MTHFR enzyme. This enzyme is governed by the MTHFR gene. It is now known that approximately 40% of the population have a mutation in the MTHFR gene causing a reduction in functioning. The MTHFR enzyme takes folate from food and converts it into methylfolate which is the active form of folate the body uses for methylation. The cofactors for the MTHFR enzyme are Vitamin B2 and Vitamin B3. What can block the updake of natural folate from food is folic acid which is a synthetic man-made form of folate. If you have the MTHFR gene, it is advised that you avoid taking folic acid. Without adequate amount of methylfoalte, the methylation pathway will not function adequately.

It is very common to see elevated homocysteine levels in people with the MTHFR gene. This is because methylfolate along with methylcobalamin is essential for the remethylation of homocysteine into methionine for the production of s-adenosyl-methionine (SAM). SAM is the universal methyl donor. When homocysteine is not remethylated to methionine it builds up in the blood. It is an inflammatory compound that causes blood clotting. Risks of blood clotting include stroke, heart attack, pre-eclampsia and miscarriage. Homocysteine also damages the blood brain barrier, which is a known risk for Alzheimer’s.

Naturopath Sydney recommends all patients with MTHFR gene mutation be tested for homocysteine. It is a fasting blood test. Ideal homocysteine levels are between 7-8.

As you can see, genetic testing such as the MTHFR gene test, allows for a truly individualised approach to health care. If you are also considering Naturopath Sydney Histamines, Naturopath Sydney Eczema or Naturopath Sydney Gut, Joanne Kennedy is also specialises in these areas.

Joanne Kennedy is a degree qualified Sydney Naturopath and Specialist in MTHFR and methylation practicing in the Sydney CBD. For more relevant details, you can simply log onto www.joannekennedy.com.au.
