Brisbane, September 25, 2018: When space is a concern, it demands you do your work twice as hard. In a small house, combining a laundry and bathroom makes sense in several ways as both are wet areas and require plumbing. However, the thought of seeing the laundry all the time you are using the bathroom may not be pleasant always. Moreover, you need to accommodate the shower and other bathroom fittings, bathroom appliances, and adequate storage in a small space. With some planning, it is possible to combine your bathroom and laundry and create the dual-purpose space.
• Conceal appliances
The key to combining a bathroom and laundry is mastering the art of concealment. You need to place the large laundry appliances tactfully so that they are not visible. Hence, when visiting a bathroom appliance store, you should choose appliances that can be hidden behind curtains or built-in cabinets. The floor-to-ceiling cabinetry along one wall should be enough to accommodate all laundry items when you can place the bathroom elements on the opposite side. Try to keep the washing machine and dryer side-by-side. Alternatively, you can stack them on top of each other as well. If you are stacking appliances, make sure that you have a front-loading washing machine. To free up more space, you can choose a combined washer/dryer.
• Sort out your storage
When you need to sort out the room for clothes, you can think about installing a pull-out basket inside the cabinetry to hide dirty clothes. Then allocate the benchtop space for folding and ironed items. Adding an ironing board and freestanding shelf unit is a great way to make your bathroom space functional and beautiful. Moreover, you can store all cleaning products and laundry powders in canisters while using open shelving for toiletries.
• Bring in light and ventilation
When you are trying to combine your laundry and bathroom, you should also consider the matter of lighting. Of course, natural light is a boon for the laundry, but it can be problematic for a combined bathroom where privacy is a concern. If possible, you can go with installing skylights, as they are ideal for bathing the space in light. If you don’t have the skylight, position windows close to the ceiling. It helps to filter light into the bathroom without compromising your privacy. It also allows you to control natural light and airflow.
