What is defibrillation?

A defibrillator is a device which provides the heart with a high energy electric shock when the heart experiences some cardiac arrest. The high energy shock proves to be beneficial in restoring a more stable rhythm. This process is known as defibrillation, and the device is called a defibrillator. It is an essential lifesaving step in the chain of survival.

Defibrillation within three minutes of sudden cardiac arrest increases the chance of survival by 35 percent. Also, defibrillation within one minute of collapse raises the survival rate of the person to 75 percent.

What is a defibrillator?

An AED or defibrillator is a battery powered and small lightweight device, which analyses the heart rhythm of the person suffering from cardiac arrest. The device can recognise irregular heart rhythms happen during the sudden cardiac arrest.

When AED is combined with the immediate application of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), a defibrillator is the only form of treatment that can be given to the person who has suffered a cardiac arrest. If a defibrillator is used within 3 to 5 minutes of a person collapsing, their survival chance increases from 6 to 74 percent.
