The Ministry of the Attorney General is the department responsible for the oversight of the justice system within the province of Ontario. The Ministry of the Attorney General has approved Centennial College's Court Support Services program, as the offering is based on its recommendations. As such, the program maintains a respected reputation among those in the industry.
The court monitor and court clerk training within this offering is compressed into two semesters and includes hands-on training that prepares students for duties that include the implementation of courtroom procedures as well as working with judges, lawyers and other courtroom personnel.
Instructors in this offering teach students through practical, career-oriented assignments as well as hands-on practice. Centennial College's Progress Campus, from which this offering is facilitated, includes a simulated courtroom setting. As faculty member Patty-Ann Sullivan notes, "We have an assimilated courtroom within Centennial College so that students will actually be able to practice taking an oath and presenting before judges."
Among the specific courses within the Court Support Services program are: Court Clerk – Family, Court Monitor, Ethics and Professional Conduct, Current Issues in Canadian Law, Word Processing Applications, and more.
In addition to the on-campus municipal court training, students also benefit from observing professionals in their place of work through attendance in family, criminal, small claims and municipal court settings as well as at various tribunal hearings.
