Rotherham MP Sarah Champion has urged the UK government to consider a re-think of education funding for teens of ages 16 to 19.

MP Sarah Champion wrote to the secretary of state for education, Damian Hinds and urged him to make sure that the education for older teenagers is taken into consideration in the upcoming education funding review.

It is of utmost importance that a sixth form education is incorporated as a part of the UK government’s funding review. The sixth form education (like the one provided by the TRC) is an essential bridge between the schools and the worlds of higher education and employment.

If observed carefully, the education funding given to teens belonging to the age group of16 to 19 years old is 20 per cent less than that compared to the funding provided to the 11 to 16 years age group. It is also 50 per cent less than the average university tuition fee.

As funding amount remains constant, the costs have continually increased and the needs of the young people have started to become complex. By excluding the sixth forms, the UK government will be letting down the expectations of many young people in the country.
