Having control over the fixed costs is usually the main objective for most of the small businesses that are looking for secured growth. Moreover, there seems to be an increase in the number of SMEs that are planning to expand their workforce in 2018.
Utility bills are increasing, there’s an uncertainty surrounding Brexit and many businesses are upgrading to adapt themselves to the impact of exchange rates on imports and the new business rates. In response to this The British Business Barometer has emphasised the importance of SMEs having control over their costs. Maintaining control over the fixed costs will help these SMEs to maintain their competitive position in the market and that way they can even keep their business plan on track.
Over the past few years, SMEs have figured out various other initiatives that help them in achieving the growth that they need. Apart from keeping the costs down, there are other key priorities that need to be handled such as:
• Improved cash flow
• Expand to new markets
• Hire new people
With respect to the above-mentioned key priorities, there were some other conclusions that were made:
• Businesses that are working on increasing the organic growth of their company in the next three-month period are supposedly keeping the fixed costs down (39%), focusing more on hiring new people (27%) and are trying to expand themselves into new markets (25%).
• For SMEs that are expected to have a business contraction (or at least fear of facing it) in the next three months period is more focused on keeping the fixed costs down (42%), trying to expand overseas or into new markets (23%) and reconsidering their finance commitments (16%).
As you can see, most of the growth initiatives that are mentioned above by the SMEs are mainly related to money (decreasing costs, improving cash flow and paying their employees on time). Given this, it comes as no surprise when SMEs look for different funding options other than bank.
