James R. Hughes, MD, has had a long and prolific career in the medical industry. He grew up in upstate New York, where his parents were teachers. His interest in medicine started in college, where he received a nursing certificate from the SUNY system in New York. He was working odd jobs when he was drafted into the army. He did so well on his entrance exams that he was assigned to work at a combat hospital in Fort Lee. He worked there as an Army Doctor, supporting special operations agents. It was during this time that he realized his true passion for medicine, and learned how to work in a high-pressure environment.

Hughes became an Army Doctor after completing medical school. James R Hughes MD chose to attend the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where he earned a Ph.D in physiology as well as his medical degree. After the Army, he moved to Richmond, Virginia, where he completed a residency program in family medicine. During this time, his interest in emergency medicine also started to increase. He chose to complete many electives in this subject, and began working in local emergency rooms on a part time basis.

After completing his residency, Hughes decided to move to Savannah, Georgia, where he worked in emergency rooms full time for over thirty years. He then decided to retire from the emergency room and work in general medicine instead, and moved to Hilton Head, South Carolina. He continues to work there, and also maintains an interest in the concept of anti-aging medicine. Hughes loves learning about new treatments and technologies in the medical field, and considers himself to be a futurist. He is very fitness-conscious, and encourages all of his patients to live healthily.

Hughes has many interests outside of his work in the medical field. He loves to ski, and has traveled all around the world to visit ski resorts. He also has developed a device that controls avalanches by managing snow movement, which has been patented. His other interests include reading, painting, and building things. He also enjoys paddle boarding in the beautiful South Carolina water.
