What is an Audiometry test?

Islamabad Hearing Center-Pvt.Ltd has specialized in the evaluation and treatment of hearing loss. We perform diagnostic testing to find the cause of the hearing loss.

What is an Audiometry test?
The outer, middle, and inner ear are the three separate sections of our ears. You can undergo audiometry tests to find out if you have sensorineural or conductive hearing loss (damage to the nerve or cochlea) (damage to the eardrum or the tiny ossicle bones). Several tests may be carried out during an audiometry evaluation.
During a pure tone audiometry test, the softest or least audible sound that a person can hear is measured. Wearing earbuds allows hearing a variety of sounds in one ear at a time while taking the test. Decibels are the units used to measure how loud a sound is (dB). A jet engine is roughly 180 dB, loud music is between 80 and 120 dB, and a whisper is around 20 dB. Frequencies are used to measure sound tone (Hz). High-pitched tones vary from 10,000 Hz or more, and low bass tones range from 50 to 60 Hz. 250–8,000 Hz at 25 dB or less falls within the normal hearing range.

These are some common ways to describe hearing loss:
HL = less than 25 dB for normal.
Mild = 25–40 HL dB
Mild = 41-65 dB HL
Significant = 66–90 dB
Profound = more than 90 db HL
What occurs throughout the test?
In a quiet soundproof environment, the audiometry tests are performed. You'll be given earbuds to wear. The device that will send speech tones and other sounds to ears, one ear at a time, is attached to the earphones. The audiologist will ask you to raise your hand when you hear a sound. For instance, when you hear a sound with your left ear, raise your left hand, and when you hear it with your right ear, raise your right hand. Some facilities may require you to press a button or make another sign to indicate that you have heard a sound. Each tone will be recorded by the audiologist at the lowest volume at which you could hear it. The Rinne and Weber tests, which can be completed either before or after the common audiometry examination, are also carried out using tuning forks. Each test evaluates the potential for potential hearing loss of various kinds.

The result?
Your referring doctor, who might be a neurosurgeon, otolaryngologist, or primary care physician, receives a report. They will go over the implications of the test results for your condition with the available treatment.
