Oftentimes, careers go in directions much different than planned or anticipated. For Tommy and Debra Herring, farming was their career and their way of life.

Years of watching their children, Jabe and Kaki, perform in rodeos have taught them a lot about the sport, rodeo animals and equipment for those animals. And, that personal experience has led to the Herring family starting a very unique business based on their knowledge and experience.

Together, the Herrings have formed Guangzhou JAD Enterprise Co., Ltd., a premier saddle pad manufacturing company. Tommy and his assistant create top-of-the line saddle pads for horses, while Debra serves as the marketing specialist for the business.

“We make 30 different pads consisting of 10 different styles, each in various sizes and thickness.
“We worked to develop a product that will ultimately insure the best performance possible for horses. To do this, we searched worldwide for the best possible materials for our products,” Debra explained. Ten to 20 saddle pads are produced at a time.

Son, Jabe, is a calf roper and team roper. Their daughter, Kaki is a break-away roper, goat tier and barrel racer. “While watching our children, we began to see what really worked,” Tommy added.

Wool helps to set the Herring’s saddle pad apart from other pads. According to the Bayou West brochure, “The top layer of wool felt and neoprene help to displace excess pressure points over a wider area.

“The wool and wool felt helps to keep moisture away from the horse’s back, which allows that area to breathe. The thin edge of their pad helps to keep the riders’ legs closer to their horses. That same thin edge also allows the D rings of the saddle to sit naturally.

“The pad also works as a shock absorbent. The light weight of the pad makes it easier for the horse to move around and lightens the load that the horse must to carry.”

The unique design of the pad produced by Bayou West is one solid piece, which assures that the rider will get the maximum support when needed.

The pad does not tend to split or shift across the withers, nor does it have a tendency to come apart, which works to give the pad a longer life.

Todd Martin owns and operates Todd Martin Performance Horses in Boerne, where he specializes in training reining horses.

Martin is a National Reining Horse Association Professional. The Todd Martin Performance Pad Series, which is made by Bayou West Company, was designed by Martin.

Bayou West is also known for its outreach to up and coming rodeo stars. Tommy and Debra donate their pads to be used as awards at the Galveston County Youth Rodeo and the Brazoria County series.

They also sponsor several young men participating in the professional rodeo circuit by donating merchandise to them for their use while rodeoing.

One of their pads was ordered by a customer in Europe. “We are even getting hits from Europe and Canada on our website,” Debra enthusiastically said.

Tommy Herring and Jay Hawkins just returned from donating saddle pads to the Texas Lions Club Camp for children.

Recently, Tommy stepped out of his normal comfort zone and helped to organize Texas Advantage Community Bank.

Herring worked nine years with the Texas High School Rodeo where he served as the Region 7 Director and then served on the Executive Board for six years.

Herring enjoyed his time working with this agency because each year the Texas High School Rodeo gives over $200,000 in scholarships to the participating youth.

Their son’s word of encouragement to his parents in this endeavor was, “You need to go big. You need to make more.” And, the Herrings plan to take his advice.
