Depression symptoms in men are similar to depression symptoms in women, but are more likely to cause withdrawal, irritation, aggression or hostility in men. Depression has the ability to disrupt lives and relationships, and can greatly interfere with work and other daily activities. So, what are the signs of depression in men?

Depression Symptoms in Men

Sleep disturbances
Fatigue
Loss of interest in usually pleasurable activities
Apathy
Changes in appetite
Affects sexual desire and performance

If left untreated, depression symptoms in men increase their risk of suicide. Even though more women attempt suicide, men are often more successful at it, accounting for up to 80% of the people in the United States who commit it. This could be due to cultural expectations of men, who, from boyhood, are taught to be strong and emotionally foolproof. Any sign of weakness, society dictates, threatens a man’s masculinity. For this reason, men who are suffering from depression may not seek help, and in fact, may not even realize they are suffering from it.

Depression has historically been labeled a “woman’s” disease, and society has placed a stigma on men who suffer from it. Because of this, men tend to handle their depression by being more likely to abuse drugs, pursue risky and reckless behavior, drink alcohol excessively, etc. As breadwinners of the family, historically, men are not supposed to be “ruled” by their emotions. They have been taught that this means they are out of control of their lives. Because of this, many men suffering from depression display a “tough guy” attitude.

What are the Signs of Depression in Older Men

With age usually come ailments. Whether it’s heart disease, cancer, stroke, etc., a chronic illness raises the risk of suffering from depression. Retirement tends to be especially hard on men, who identify themselves through their work, and therefore may end up feeling like they have no real value, or something to offer.
