Maki Kamimura is a regular volunteer at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California. Maki Kamimura encourages people interested in community work to consider volunteering in medical centers.

Millions of people help their communities each and every year. People perform charity work either in-person or from afar. People donate both their personal time and spare money to help organizations for animals or people in need.

Maki Kamimura knows what it means to donate time you could spend otherwise. As a very active person, Maki Kamimura loves to golf and she spends many hours out on the golf course every year. But volunteering is important to Maki Kamimura too. “Even though there are probably other things you need or would like to be doing, you always feel good about helping others, even when you know you are not the one who will benefit,” says Maki Kamimura.

Maki Kamimura performs all her volunteer work at City of Hope National Medical Center. “The center does a lot of good. It is a nonprofit, private clinical research center, hospital, and even cancer treatment center,” says Maki Kamimura. The center also has branch locations all over California.

As a child, Maki Kamimura had a strong desire to help people. “When I was young, I wanted to be a doctor, but now, I am just as happy to help people as a volunteer at the medical center,” says Maki Kamimura. And medical centers around the country are thankful for every person willing and ready to volunteer their personal time and services.

“Volunteers don’t do too much with patients, but they can help perform a number of tasks for the center, like filing paperwork or calling insurance companies,” says Maki Kamimura. However, the work of every volunteer is appreciated by the center. As a nonprofit medical center, volunteers help the medical center run efficiently without costing anything to the center.

Maki Kamimura often talks about her work as a volunteer. Talking with others, Maki Kamimura shares the benefits of working as volunteer. “People can use their work as a volunteer on resumes, job applications, and applying to college as a student. Volunteer work always looks good,” says Maki Kamimura. For someone looking to go into social works or public services, volunteer work is a great way to stand out.
