Halmari tea started the season with a new record sells Assam brew’s first flush at Rs 401

Kolkatta, West Bengal: The tea auctions always spell surprises by fetching record prices. This time, a new record has been created not during the second flush, but early during the first flush. Assam’s Halmari tea has created a new record recently by fetching a price of Rs 401 at Calcutta tea auction’s sale number 17.

This Assam brew is generated in the garden in Dibrugarh district, which is located in upper Assam. Subodh Brothers Pvt Ltd purchased Halmari garden’s CTC grade named Broken Orange Pekoe (BOP). They bought 270 kgs of this tea at the auction, which was conducted by the world’s largest tea auctioneers, J. Thomas & Co Private Ltd.

Halmari plucked BOP during the first flush on March 28 and 29. BOP is one of the best varieties from the Halmari garden. The combination of strength and flavor is very balanced and thus it offers a unique experience. Moreover, this grade variety is a little bolder that allows the consumers to experience the taste and aroma to its fullest.

People all over the world love Assam tea for its briskness, bright color, lovely aroma, fuller body and a rich malt flavour. It was quite clear that Assam tea was the most favorite among the other varieties at the auctions. It was evident from remarkable prices that it fetched at Calcutta’s Sale 17, which went from Rs 384 to Rs 391, Rs 394, Rs 397 and Rs 401 finally. The prices at the Guwahati auction were impressive as well, which was Rs 321, Rs 326 and Rs 353.

According to J. Thomas & Co Private Ltd’s head Krishan Katyal, “Every season has a particular attribute and those who can exploit it to its best can create a classic tea.”

Halmari’s General Manager D.K. Arora noticed that people are inclining towards mellower blends. The second flush liquor is strong whereas the first flush liquor is light and the record price that Halmari’s first flush Assam tea fetched proves his point.

This is not the first time that Halmari is creating new records. In fact, the garden has created record every time during the second flush. At the Calcutta auction of 2016, which was held on July 28, Halmari’s second flush tea holds the record of Rs 600/kg.
