What to look for in a scooter repair shop

Scooter and motorcycle enthusiasts spend a lot of money and time trying to find the right repair shop. And it gets even worse if you own or consider buying a Chinese scooter.

The scooter can be an easy and fast way to get you where you want to be in a very short period of time. If you want to travel a short distance, then it is one of the few alternatives to a car. But, unlike a car, it is much more economical and a lot more fun. But there might be a downside to owning a scooter if you can’t find a good scooter repair shop. A motorcycle or scooter owner will have to endure a lot before finding the right shop for his needs.

And it can get even worse if you own a Chinese scooter. Reliable Chinese scooter repair shops are even harder to find. Not every mechanic has worked on one of these so if you take your bike to someone that didn’t have any experience, they will probably not do a very good job; and that’s because Chinese scooters have a different manufacturing process than American – or Japanese – made ones.

If you decide to buy your scooter online, you will probably be required to assemble the front wheel, handlebars, windshield (if equipped), the battery and the trunk. But it’s not as easy as you might think. Therefore, in order for your new scooter to function as it’s meant to be for a long time, it is preferred that you take it to a scooter repair shop in order to set it up properly. If you buy a Chinese scooter, then it is mandatory that you change the motor oil with, preferably, synthetic oil, but you can also use normal motor oil.

The decision of choosing a repair shop can actually be more important then choosing the bike itself. A good way to find a reliable shop is to ask around for opinions. If you find out that a certain shop is very busy, then it is probably a good one. Also, try calling and telling them the problems you have in order to get an initial feedback. If their responses to your questions are clear and specific, you know that they know what they’re talking about.

After calling them to arrange an inspection of your scooter or motorcycle, and you pay them a visit, notice the atmosphere around the shop. If you see frustrated bike owners, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are not satisfied with the customer service. But if you hear a lot of customers talking about poor customer service, you should leave. It’s nothing better than, when arriving at a repair shop, you hear passionate owners talking about their experiences.

If you own a Chinese scooter, the last and probably most important thing is to find a Chinese scooter repair shop that has in stock various parts for your scooter. It’s nothing worse for someone that has no experience in buying bike parts than trying to search all over a piece for a part that’s hard to find. You can also get ripped-off by shops you visit.
