The reason for moving overseas may be varied, but the questions you need to ask yourself are: What should you do with your belongings? Do you want to leave them behind or have you decided to take them with you to your new destination? With the latter option, another issue comes up: What should you do to get your household items transported to your new location?

Moving overseas can be a tough task and you need to begin somewhere to start the process. It’s a good idea to take quotes from three or more different international movers, who have years of experience in the field of moving goods internationally. Once you have decided on this, then you need to carefully weigh your options, keeping in mind that the quoted price is not the only thing to be considered, you also need to question the movers’ agents and find out their answers to the following questions.

1. What kind of insurance is being offered? What all items are covered and what are not? May I see a copy of your insurance documents?

2. Tell me about your company. What is its history? How long has your firm been in this business? Can you show how many international moving of goods have you done in the past year?

3. What time will your moving truck arrive and how long will it take to upload the goods? Get these logistics in writing.

4. Can you give me a list of your references?

5. Is your company a member of a trade association? If so, which association?

6. If there’s a delay in shipping my goods, where do you intend to store them? Are they secured in that place?

7. With regards to Customs forms, ask your international movers: Will you handle the filling of the form? Are you qualified to do that?

8. Does your quote include charges such as destination customs and quarantine clearances and destination port charges, in case you are transporting your goods by sea. Some moving companies do not include these in the quote and may surprise you at the other end.

When moving overseas, you can opt to do the packing yourself, but you should note that this can result in a number of problems. For example, if you are doing the packing, you may not be covered by insurance being offered by the international movers. Another thing is when customs realize that your items are not professionally packed; they may subject your shipment to inspection. In the long run, it might be in your best interest to leave this job to the international mover’s crew.

There are two ways to move your goods when you are moving overseas: by air or by sea. If you decide to move by air, obviously it will be faster, but also more costly. Your items need to be packed in smaller boxes and still must pass customs scrutiny at your destination. Doing the moving by sea can save you money; however, your goods will take a long time to arrive.
