Gerüchte über eine Systemkamera mit größerem Sensor von Nikon gab es seit Jahren. Es schien, als bringe das Unternehmen erst eine möglichst kleine Kamera mit APS-C-Sensor (Sensorgröße 15,6x23,5 Millimeter) heraus. Doch jetzt gibt es erst einmal Profi-Systemkameras mit Vollformatsensor (Sensorgröße 23,9x35,9 Millimeter, wie beim Kleinbildfilm). Erstes Modell ist die Nikon Z7 mit einem 45-Megapixel-Sensor, die vor allem der Sony Alpha 7R III Konkurrenz machen soll. Im November folgt dann die Nikon Z6 (siehe letzter Absatz) mit einem 24-Megapixel-Sensor, die die Sony Alpha 7 III ins Visier nimmt. Die Nikon Z7 hat die gleiche Auflösung wie die Nikon D850, kommt aber mit einem neuen Sensor. Wichtigster Unterschied: Er bringt 493 Autofokus-Messpunkte auf dem Sensor mit.

Wie bei den meisten modernen Systemkameras kombiniert der Autofokus „Phase Change“ (hohes Tempo) und Kontrastmessung (hohe Genauigkeit). Die Messpunkte decken den größten Teil des Bilds ab. Der Autofokus der Nikon Z7 reagiert extrem schnell: Nach nur 0,10 Sekunden hatte die Kamera scharf gestellt und ausgelöst – ein neuer Rekord fürs Vollformat. Bislang schafften das nur Systemkameras mit kleineren Sensoren wie die Panasonic Lumix G9. Erfreulich: Die Nikon Z7 fokussiert auch mit Spiegelreflexobjektiven richtig schnell. Bei Serien führt die Z7 die Schärfe schnell und genau nach, erreicht aber nicht ganz das Tempo und die Genauigkeit einer Profi-Spiegelreflex wie der Nikon D850. Nikon-Spiegelreflexfotografen müssen sich bei der Bedienung des Autofokus etwas umstellen, die Z7 hat eine andere Auswahl an Messmodi. So gibt es beispielsweise keinen Gruppen-Autofokus mehr, dafür aber einen „Pinpoint“-Autofokus mit extrem kleinem Messfeld – praktisch für sehr kleinteilige Motive. Bei automatischer Messfeldwahl erkennt die Z7 selbstständig Gesichter.

Beim eingebauten elektronischen Sucher geht Nikon in die Vollen: Die Z7 kommt mit einer hochauflösenden Variante, die mit 1280x960 Pixeln arbeitet (laut Hersteller 3,69 Millionen Pixel, da er die Subpixel für Rot, Grün und Blau zählt). Mehr Bildpunkte bietet aktuell nur die Leica SL. Der Sucher ist mit seiner 0,80-fachen Vergrößerung sichtbar größer als bei einer Spiegelreflex; selbst die Nikon D850 hält da nicht ganz mit. Der Sucher ist ein echtes Topmodell: Er zeigt ein großes, helles und detailreiches Bild. Nervige Ruckler, etwa bei schnellen Querschwenks, gibt es nicht zu sehen. Echt praktisch: Bei den Sucheranzeigen geht Nikon einen anderen Weg als die Konkurrenz: Belichtungszeit, Blende und weitere Aufnahmedaten zeigt die Z7 außerhalb des Bilds an, um den Blick aufs Motiv nicht zu stören. Das eingebaute Display ist ebenfalls top: Sehr detailreich dank hoher Auflösung (2,1 Millionen Pixel) und sehr hell (bis zu 800 Candela pro Quadratmeter). Es lässt sich nach oben und unten, aber nicht zur Seite ausklappen. In bisherigen Nikon-Systemkameras steckt der Bildstabilisator im Objektiv, bei den neuen im Kameragehäuse.
