Integrated digital mapping is slowly becoming the most powerful tool for the military and non-military organizations to take crucial decisions on the fields of battle or during HQ meetings. With the advancement of Global Positioning technologies, it has become way easier for the police and intelligence officials to track the geographical locations of their cohorts and also take decisions quickly which extremely essential for these people. Different parts of the defence system of various countries have already adopted this system including the terrain analysis departments, mission planning departments and logistics movement departments as well. The front line will be the last to using the GIS services, as opined by some of the masterminds behind using innovative methods of tracking in defence systems such as Steve Pyatt, Director, GEOINT Policy and Plans, New Zealand MoD.

Digital mapping systems produce high-quality images and related information for the defence officials. Geospatial intelligence is commonly used in various security forces around the world and the superpowers have always preferred this innovative way of rendering crucial data. The higher officials and the control room people can easily filter essential data from the masses of it and communicate with the concerned departments and deployed troops with updated information almost every time. Fetching geographical data and other sorts of crucial data is important and the HQ can easily manage this work with the help of the GIS services. Geo-intelligence departments are helping now the control room people to send and receive packets of data and equipping the battlefront with necessary data fragments and send commands as well. Slowly but surely, intelligence officials of many countries are adopting these systems.

In-theatre operations can be rightly managed by the digital mapping systems. It is important for a troop and the commanders in charge of it to understand the nature of the local population. Geographers and anthropologists are often called for mapping battle terrains. This is to help the army to think in a calculative and logical manner and fight transgression of all forms with having the local people beside. In every phase of fighting crime and terrorism, this will definitely help the ground forces to better communicate with the local people and to get the bigger picture. There are experts like Steve Pyatt who strongly believe that the GIS services are going to benefit more and more armed forces who are deployed in various areas to safeguard the sovereignty of their respective countries. Modern day warfare is not about incessant bombing or ruthless killing of people. Armed forces are now required to socialize with local people of the region where they are deployed and need to uplift their socio-economic status as well.

Digital mapping is the tomorrow of controlling armed troops and their activities. It has all the potentials of reinforcing the intelligence system of any defence organization and, at the same time, can educate the ground forces how to mix and mingle with local people and can strengthen the security and connectivity of the armed forces as well. GIS services are also used by police departments.
Come January 2013 and a galaxy of senior GIS professionals and defence professionals will be seen speaking at Defence Geospatial Intelligence (DGI)’s QEII Conference Centre, Westminster, London on digital mapping http://www.wbresearch.com/dgieurope/steve_pyatt.aspx systems and their how they can be implemented in the law enforcement and defence departments. Book your seat now, watch the 2012 presentations, check out the interview videos and send in your enquiries about GIS services http://www.wbresearch.com/dgieurope/fitzgerald.aspx now by visiting the DGI official website.
