Sophie Theallet’s designs are set to make their cinematic debut next year. The designer is creating two couture gowns to be worn by Kate Winslet in the film “The Dressmaker,” which will begin filming in rural Victoria, Australia, next month.

Based on Rosalie Ham’s novel about an Australian dressmaker who trains under Madeleine Vionnet in Paris in the 1950s and then returns to the outback to transform the women of the town with her designs, the film is directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse (“Proof,” “How to Make an American Quilt”). Moorhouse was introduced to Theallet by their friend Rupert Everett. In a bit of a meta moment, just as Winslet’s Tilly trains under Vionnet, Theallet spent 10 years with Azzedine Alaïa before setting up her own business in New York.
