The Eye Center Offers Cutting-Edge Glaucoma, Cataracts Treatment

The new surgical option reduces eye pressure in patients with both conditions.

Columbia, S.C, Nov 17, 2015 – The Eye Center is pleased to announce it is now offering a new treatment option for adult patients who suffer from cataracts and glaucoma both. The smallest-ever medical device approved by the FDA effectively controls eye pressure, helping glaucoma patients reduce dependency on costly, inconvenient eye drops.

The device, known as the iStent, is used in conjunction with cataract surgery to treat people with mild-to-moderate open-angle glaucoma. The iStent procedure has been proven in clinical trials to safely lower eye pressure in those with glaucoma. It is placed into a patient’s eye after cataract surgery to enable better control over pressure, potentially reducing or eliminating a patient’s need to use eye drops to protect and preserve vision.

The Eye Center’s Dr. Matthew Clary was the first doctor in Columbia to perform the surgery and is now one of only two in the area to offer it to patients.
“This is fantastic news for people with glaucoma and cataracts who are seeking a way to reduce reliance on eye drops, which are often difficult to administer and expensive to keep up with,” says Dr. Clary. “The iStent is so small patients cannot see or feel it after the procedure is performed. It works silently to control pressure that can rob glaucoma patients of their eyesight.”

The iStent is considered an especially significant breakthrough in preventing long-term vision loss associated with glaucoma because it requires no action on the part of a patient to serve its purpose. Studies have shown that more than 90 percent of patients do not follow proper dosing procedures with ocular medication to control eye pressure. The iStent works without patients having to remember to use it.

“When eye pressures are allowed to run uncontrolled, the risk for permanent vision loss rises dramatically,” says Dr. Clary. “The iStent protects glaucoma patients while easing the need for other interventions.”
