The first and most important thing you need to know about your silk rug is that silk is quite unlike any other kind of material. Silk is very strong, and can be expected to last for many years with proper care.
The next thing you need to know about silk rug cleaning is that domestic cleaning chemicals are NOT to be used on this material. Silk dyes may respond very badly to bleaches, for example.
Unlike other types of rugs, silk is a very fine weave, rather than a very heavy weave like Persian rugs or wool rugs. The material of the rug may feel heavy, but the actual strands of silk are quite fine and quite light. That means that silk will respond differently to cleaning, too.
It's okay to vacuum silk rugs. They can withstand fairly high vacuum strength. It's not okay, however, for them to be in any way scraped, brushed with anything hard, or abrasive.
It's also not okay not to clean them regularly. Silk will absorb materials, like dust, pollen, fungi, and of course anything that happens to get tramped into the house. Basic cleaning will minimise the effects of these accumulated materials. About every two years, you should get your silk rug professionally cleaned. This cleaning is to ensure that the accumulated materials don't damage the rug, and to ensure that the rug is hygienically cleaned.
