Dr. Thomas V Taylor Provides Advice To New Lecturers

Posted May 7, 2016 by drthomasvtaylor

In addition to being a talented surgeon, Dr. Thomas V Taylor spent much of his career teaching others and held many lectures during the course of his career.

Dr. Thomas V Taylor has always understood that high quality education is important to any surgeon who is looking to advance. Not only does knowledge put surgeons in a better place to move forward in their careers, but it also ensures that they provide the highest level of care to their patients when they are on the operating table. It is this belief that led him to teach for as long as he did during his career, helping the next generation of surgeons learn all that they needed to know to be effective in the role.

At various points during his career, Dr Thomas V Taylor taught anatomy at the University of Manchester and was the Senior Lecturer in Surgery at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. However, it was not until he took a position as a Professor of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas that he truly developed his skills. During his time at the college, he ascended to the role of Chief of Academic Surgery, also taking on the position of Chief of Postgraduate Medical Education in the process.

In this role he has the privilege to help other lecturers improve their technique, so that they could deliver everything that their students needed from their classroom sessions. He placed his focus on ensuring that lesson plans were flexible and took time restrictions into account, encouraging lecturers to deliver their points succinctly, thus allow time for students to ask any questions that they may have had on the subject.

While he has retired from his teaching role, Dr. Thomas V Taylor is still keen to help others who teach to improve. He believes that, regardless of the subject, teachers must be confident in their own abilities and capable of delivering the information that their students need to know with an air of authority and an undoubtable passion for the subject. In his retirement, he dedicates as much of his spare time as possible to learning new things, and he believes that this thirst for knowledge is something that all teachers must share if they are to be successful in the role.
