“History shows us a window into our past. Historical fiction can take us by the hand and lead us into that world.” - Judith Geary

Judith has accurately summarized the reason for people’s fascination with historical fiction. And since we are on the subject of history, let’s talk about the evolution of the publishing industry.

Technical innovation and social change are the two main forces behind the evolution and development of publishing. The spread of literacy, along with three major inventions—writing, paper, and printing—paly a major role in bringing the publishing industry to its current level.

Early publishing had a profound effect on national languages and literatures—it began at once to create, standardize, and preserve them. The earliest development to publishing—if it can be called that— can be traced back to when the Chinese inventor Bi Sheng made movable type of earthenware circa 1045, but there are no known surviving examples of his printing. Around 1450, in what is commonly regarded as an independent invention, Johannes Gutenberg invented movable type in Europe, along with innovations in casting the type based on a matrix and hand mould. This invention gradually made books less expensive to produce, and more widely available.

Publishing became possible with the invention of writing. Printing in Europe has seen a new dawn during the Renaissance and Reformation. It has been at the heart of the expanding intellectual movement of the past 500 years. Although printing was thought of at first merely as a means of avoiding copying errors, its possibilities for mass-producing written matter soon became evident. Eventually, printing enabled other forms of publishing besides books. The history of modern newspaper publishing started in Germany in 1609, with publishing of magazines following in 1663.

The book publishing industry grew throughout the 19th century. The dramatic increase in literacy in America along with the growth in libraries and public schools provided a rapidly growing market for books. In addition, the introduction of technological advances allowed more volume at less cost. Big publishing firms, some of which remain active till today, emerged in the 19th century. This was also when the key functions of publishing, such as selecting the material to be printed and bearing the financial risk, shifted from the printer to the bookseller, and eventually to the publisher.

Historically, publishing has been handled by publishers, but with the 21st century came some new technological changes to the publishing industry. These changes include e-books, print on demand, and accessible publishing. A further development is the growth of on-line publishing where no physical books are produced. The ebook is created by the author and uploaded to a website from where it can be downloaded and read by anyone.
