Dioxide Materials, a small business in Boca Raton, is pleased to announce they are developing an economic solution to reducing carbon emissions in an effort to diminish greenhouse gases and thus help to protect the environment. This company is poised to profit from a waste gas that many industries discard.

The technology that Dioxide Materials is developing enables CO2 electrolyzers to run at low temperature and pressure and use low cost waste inputs of CO2, water and low-carbon renewable energy, such as wind and solar, to produce “syngas”, which will enable one to profitably produce marketable chemicals and fuels, including acrylic acid, formic acid, jet fuel, and gasoline.

Electrolyzers can now enable the production of renewable fuels and chemicals. The first step will be to convert CO2 to CO for the production of syngas. Dioxide Materials™ is a leader in this area. The catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide into fuels, chemicals, and other useful products is a long term goal of the Department of Energy18. So far, many processes have been proposed, but none of them are commercially viable.
The electrochemical conversion of CO2 is particularly attractive. A 2008 DOE report18 noted that the “electrochemical generation of chemical products is a mature technology and already practiced on enormous scales in the production of chlorine and aluminum,”18 but was limited by the lack of effective catalysts. The DOE report notes, “Electron conversion efficiencies of greater than 50% can be obtained, but at the expense of very high overpotentials (~1.5 V).” The overpotential represents lost energy in the process, so a process with a high overpotential is uneconomic.

In 2011, workers at Dioxide Materials discovered16, 19 that the combination of two catalysts, i.e., a metal (silver) and an ionic liquid solution containing equal volumes of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMIM-BF4) and water, reduced the overpotential for CO2 conversion to carbon monoxide (CO) from about 1 volt to only 0.17 volts. This work has been highlighted in over 100 news sources including Science20, Nature Climate Change21, Scientific American22, Motortrend23 and Cankao Xiaoxi24. The discovery has been called “One of The Most Important Scientific Papers of the Year” 25. This advance makes CO2 conversion economically feasible.

With the changes in weather patterns and the threat of global warming, more individuals and businesses are looking for ways to make their lives and work more environmentally friendly. To help with this ever-increasing concern, Dioxide Materials has created a plan that will not only help protect the environment, but will also create thousands of jobs throughout the United States. For energy, they use renewable energy sources with no CO2 emissions, such as solar and wind power, and combine it with waste CO2 and water to create fuels and chemicals that can eventually help power the items people use every day.

The products and processes created by Dioxide Materials are created to reduce the use of non-renewable resources, as well as the CO2 emissions typically released by the use of these materials. Many CO2 emitters today will be able to leverage this technology to create sustainable products that help protect the environment.
