From Detached Garages to Old Cathedrals

Unruh Furniture, owned by Sam Unruh, started making furniture for a living when his wife talked him into quitting his job. He started creating masterpieces in their detached garage and backyard. He and his wife later on bought an old house to fix up and turned it into a shop.

As his team grew, there was a need to move into a bigger place and after a few years, he stumbled upon a stone church on 3600 Walnut Street.

In between moves and having twins, Sam encountered the abandoned but captivating Westminster Congregational Church. After touring it with a realtor on a whim, he knew that he wanted to make the dream of creating furniture in the old cathedral a reality.

He and his team nearly stripped the stone church of its original stonework, added HVAC and electrical systems, as well as turned the balcony classrooms into showrooms. The team moved in after nine months.

Showroom Visits at Kansas City’s Leading Furniture Boutique

Unruh Furniture’s encourages visits and has weekly walk-in tours are every Wednesday at 4:15. Visitors can go to the site and get a fun tour of the shop and the showroom.

The showroom is open from Tuesdays through Saturdays.
