Businessmen selling personal computers (PCs) locally are screaming because the they are eroded by tablets, smartphones, ultrabooks, and notebooks with more affordable prices.

Many local computer sellers in Indonesia have swerved into many other businesses. This is due to the small profit margin they get. The Chairman of the Indonesian Computer Entrepreneurs Association revealed this to an online newspaper.

According to him, the assembled PC sales have dropped dramatically, especially components that are also increasingly rare in the market.

He said that the government's policy related to government tenders in environments that require the use of a PC of the famous brand also triggers a decline in sales of PCs.

The national PC industry itself has entered hard times since last year, and is predicted to continue this year. Based on the data from IDC research institutes, computer sales in 2012 fell compared to 2011. Globally, computer sales fell 6.4 percent and only recorded sales of 89.8 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012.

IDC also said the PC market in the Asia Pacific region, including Japan, has been experiencing double-digit declines in the first quarter of this year due to weak demand and a familiar yet new operating system like Windows 8 which is used in ultrabook terbaru such as what is produced by Samsung Electronics.

Only about 26.4 million of PCs were shipped in the region in the first three months of this year. The number is down 8 percent from the previous quarter and 13 percent from the previous year.

Now the price of PCs is almost the same as notebook PCs, so consumers prefer a notebook or ultrabook for those who are mobile. Tablets have also become more affordable.
