Urinalysis is the examination of urine with respect to physical, chemical and microscopic parameters. It is carried out by collecting a small sample of urine usually 30 to 60 ml in a specimen cup. Urinalysis involves a number of tests in order to detect and determine various components that pass through urine. Urinalysis aid clinicians in diagnosis of various diseases such as urinary tract infection, kidney infection, to evaluate causes of kidney failure, to monitor the progression of some chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus. The parameters that are measured or quantified in urinalysis include several substances and cells, along with other properties, such as specific gravity, osmolality and pH. A detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis is performed under urinalysis. The quantitative analysis involves detection of ions and trace metals, proteins and enzymes, blood cells and other molecules such as glucose, ketone bodies, bilirubin, creatinine ,etc. The qualitative parameters include detection of color, odor, cloudiness, appearance, specific gravity, etc.
