One can hear and see a piano, a contrabass, drums, and wind instruments (a trumpet, trombones, and saxophones) in the recording. These are the typical instruments used in jazz bands. The overall structure is thick in the intro, because there are a lot of different musical instruments’ sounds and their combinations. The tonal color is created mostly by the contrabass but also by the piano, trumpets, and trombones. The bass keeps the basic tempo of the song; it keeps playing throughout the whole performance. The tempo is rather fast, creating a gay and playful mood. The music performance by Black musicians taking place in a train running through rural America creates special ambience of the good old times with their fancy charm, emotions and style.
The dynamics changes several times in the musical composition. The first alteration one can encounter in the very beginning of the song, it is exciting and makes listeners feel curious about the further development of the theme. The second time happens when the vocal starts, in order to lay emphasis on the voice. Lastly, at the end, the tempo slows down and the music quiets down.
In the song, a woman’s voice is accompanied by three men’s voices. In my submission, the vocals undoubtedly add to the song, actually, setting the mood of it. Without this essential part, the musical composition would not be so bright, memorable, and unique. It would lose something that one can call a common thread or the main theme of the story. Another integral part of the composition is dancing. It shapes a special performance out of just an audio work. I would be glad to hear the song again. It encourages, makes me smile, and empathize with the musicians and the vocalist, leaving a pleasant light feeling and sweet emotional aftertaste.
