There are so many books that can be categorised as action novels, and picking out one of them is not an easy task. But to make this task quicker, here is a list of the best action writers who you definitely need to give a chance.

- Stephen Hunter
A Pulitzer Prize–winning film critic for the Washington Post, Hunter is the grand master of the action-thriller genre today. Hunter’s creative imagination and writing skills are simply breathtaking. The wealth of detail he provides for period and place; his refined ear for dialogue and dialects; the psychological depth and originality of his characterizations; and the hard, driven men of almost mythic stature. What more could any reader possibly want?

- Robert Crais
Crais conjured a tough, smart-mouthed L.A. detective hero enamored of rock music, Disney collectibles, and the martial arts, and saddled with the unlikely moniker of Elvis Cole. Elvis is a man with an inviolate code of honor: a paladin traversing a dark, dangerous world, setting things to right for those deserving vindication, bringing righteous wrath down upon those deserving vengeance.

- Patricia Highsmith
The New York Times has described Highsmith's novels as "hypnotic and amoral," and the anti-hero of The Talented Mr. Ripley is precisely that. Tom Ripley is a shape-shifting grifter who has no problems murdering and then taking over a wealthy man's identity to further his own agenda and fortunes. Highsmith used Ripley as a character in several novels, but this is the first and most famous.

- Donna Tartt
There must be something in the water around Bennington, Vermont that inspires women to write dark, twisty novels—Tartt is a graduate of Bennington, and Shirley Jackson lived in the area. The Secret History is about a group of classics students at the fictional Hampden College (modeled after Bennington) who commit a terrible crime while attempting to experience an ancient rite of passage.

- Joseph Kanon
A regular fixture on the New York Times's bestseller charts; a film of his 2003 novel, The Good German, starring George Clooney and Cate Blanchett, was released in Britain last month. Kanon, now 60, was at the top of his career when he quit to go hiking in the deserts of the American south-west. While there, he became fascinated by the Manhattan Project - the creation of the atom bomb - which took place at the desert base of Los Alamos, New Mexico, a place so secret that it did not officially exist. The result was his award-winning debut novel, Los Alamos, and the realisation that he had hit on a period he could make his own. The Good German takes place in Berlin, months after Hitler's downfall; his latest paperback, Alibi, is set in Venice, 1946. It's a fascinating moment in recent history and Kanon captures it brilliantly.
