Final Fantasy XV‘s absence from E3 2015 may have left some Final Fantasy fans feeling disappointed, but chances are after the announcement of the Final Fantasy VII Remake, those feelings quickly evaporated. Even so, the idea of a new Final Fantasy spin-off title being announced was probably the last thing on anyone’s mind.
With the Final Fantasy VII Remake on display, and a promise to show off some more of Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward at the Square Enix showcase on Tuesday, most Final Fantasy fans probably could’ve finished the event feeling satisfied. However, Square Enix had one more Final Fantasy surprise up its sleeve: a new title, called World of Final Fantasy.
World of Final Fantasy is a spin-off game that looks to be taking a page from the Kingdom Hearts series, in that it’s pulling together multiple Final Fantasy universes into one, stylized game. The trailer didn’t provide much detail about its gameplay, but the plot evidently revolves around a sister and brother who find themselves in a magical world called Grimoire. This world is full of miniaturized, cutesy versions of Final Fantasy monsters and protagonists from prior Final Fantasy titles, though what they’re doing there is unknown. These siblings can do battle in the world with the help of these creatures and heroes, and can shrink to ride monsters or become large to allow the monsters to ride on them.
It remains to be seen if this Final Fantasy crossover world somehow ties into the crossover worlds of Kingdom Hearts or even Dissidia. What is interesting is that the visual appearance of the siblings makes them look like they would fit right in with the Kingdom Hearts crowd, so maybe that indicates a connection. How they transition between super-deformed, hyper-cute characters and more realistically proportioned people is also a mystery, though it may be the method they use in order to use the riding game system.
World of Final Fantasy may not have been what Final Fantasy fans were hoping for, but it’s effectively icing on the cake considering the Final Fantasy VII Remake announcement. Crossover games can be a lot of fun, so hopefully this one will follow in the footsteps of Square Enix’s other crossover titles.
World of Final Fantasy will be released in 2016 on PlayStation 4 and PSVita, with more consoles following its exclusivity period.
