EMC Shielding and Test Equipment Market: Innovations Driving the Future of Electronics

Posted July 25, 2023 by ctom7000

Radiation segment expected to lead the EMC shielding and test equipment market in 2023

Global EMC shielding and test equipment market size was valued at USD 6.4 billion in 2020 and is projected to reach USD 8.2 billion by 2025; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.2% from 2020 to 2025. The growth of the EMC shielding and test equipment market is majorly driven by surging demand for consumer electronics, increasing electromagnetic pollution, and ongoing demonstration of field trials and pilot tests to manifest the viability of 5G technology.

The ever-increasing use of electronic systems in the automotive industry, ongoing advancements in wireless cellular infrastructure, and rising demand for consumer electronic products are expected to fuel the demand for EMC shielding solutions and test equipment in APAC.

Driver: Surging demand for consumer electronics:

Computers, smartphones, tablets, and laptops are some of the electronic appliances that are widely used by common people for different purposes, including communication, entertainment, and official work. Factors such as voice-assisted personal infotainment systems, rising adoption of electronic appliances in vehicles, an increasing number of smartphones, the influence of artificial intelligence, and the upcoming deployment of 5G cellular networks largely support the growth of consumer electronics worldwide.

Opportunity: Growing adoption of electric vehicles:

Electric vehicles are of 3 main types—battery electric vehicles (BEVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Asia (China and Japan), Europe, and the US are some of the largest markets for electric vehicles, exhibiting significant growth in sales. Against the backdrop of growing environmental concerns and government support, electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and buses are witnessing huge traction these days.
Power converters, electric motors, shielded and unshielded cables, wireless chargers, and batteries are the key components of a typical electric drive system and are subject to EMI and electromagnetic radiation. Wireless charging for electric vehicles has become increasingly popular in the recent past.

Challenge: Trade-off between minituarization and EMC shielding of electronic devices:

Advancements in integrated circuits and power systems have dramatically reduced the size of various electronic devices, such as smartphones, cameras, TVs, and computers. The miniaturization of such devices leads to concerns related to the interference of signals within the device as the technology integrates various components (transmitters, sensors, receivers, and others) in a single compact enclosure. The smaller size of the components and their proximity largely increases the chances of exposure to EMC from adjacent components within the same device. The smaller size also reduces the overall space available for EMC shielding solutions. It is very hard to identify EMI in such small circuitry. While simple off-the-shelf shielding boxes were used in the past for shielding, their inability to fit into the existing designs hinders their utilization in these smaller devices. This, in turn, necessitates the use of customized shielding solutions, which ultimately adds to the overall product cost.
