This article discusses the statistics and reports associated with vehicle fires and the causes of such fires.

Vehicle defects may be the underlying cause of car fires than any other issues. It has been noted that most of these defects are electrical in nature which may ignite other parts of the vehicle. The existence of such defects in a vehicle may result in a fatality or severe injury to the occupants of the vehicle. One article shared the following statistics with regards to car fires; “The dangers of car fires are receiving more attention as defects are appearing more often and are discovered in a wide variety of brands. Each year, the United States experiences around 190 000 car fires. These fires result in about 300 deaths with over 1 200 injuries to passengers and drivers. The property loss and damage to vehicles runs over $1.1 billion due to widespread destruction and loss of internal mechanisms. Most of these accidents are in cars and trucks with gas or diesel engines.”

Looking at recent vehicle recalls that have been made it was noted that since 2013 GM has recalled over 38 000 of its vehicles, some of these records include the Chevrolet Malibu Eco and the Buick Regal sedans. These vehicles were suffering from a defective generator part that mat stall the vehicle or possibly produce a fire. A recall in 2012 by Chrysler was made for around 68 000 2010 model Jeep Wranglers; these vehicles were affected with a fire hazard that needed to be repaired similar to GM.

United States Fire Administration stated that, “Equipment failures have been determined to be the cause of about 24% of all vehicles fires. These may include mechanical issues, a fault in the design of the automobile, improperly installed devices and electrical issues. Another 24% of auto accidents on highways are still unknown. This may mean that defects in vehicles may be responsible for a greater percentage of fires in vehicles than what is currently reported.”

‘Reports from the United States Fire Administration state that mechanical malfunctions or breakdowns are leading factors that ignite fires in vehicles on highways. These malfunctions may be a leak or break in a part of the vehicle, control failures in automatic or manual controls, improper types of parts and improperly implemented systems. Electrical fires provide another 22% of these same fires. These may be a short in a circuit, wires crossing that should be covered, severed wires or loss of power.’

Other vehicle defect include braking systems malfunction which renders the vehicle unable to stop when needed and may cause an accident. In other instances a vehicle may start to accelerate or decelerate without prompt which could lead to a crash with others or objects. Defective tires may cause a blowout, if the vehicle roof has a problem defect it may cave in or rip apart - glass and airbags may have the same issue.

If your vehicle fire leads to injury or damage as a result of a defect it is of the utmost importance to find personal injury attorneys lawsuit professionals who know the law and its application to determine whether compensation may be available. In addition, suffering burns may require long-term care and compensation for such injury and may result in the payout of medical bills and constant treatment.
