Culture mapping can help transform unhappy workplaces

Corporate Challenge Events offers 38 different team building programs including charity-based events, all of which can be tailored for the needs and objectives of all clients.

Culture mapping is a great method to gain an understanding of those habitual behaviours and ‘water cooler’ conversations that drive the culture of the organisation, according to corporate training specialist Anita Kropacsy.

Culture mapping is the discovery of what a workplace culture currently looks like, why it looks that way and the design of the culture moving forward.

“I have had many business owners or leaders come to me over the years eager to change their corporate culture or find a solution to a cultural issue within their workplace,” said Kropacsy, the
Corporate Training Manager for Corporate Challenge Events in Australia and New Zealand.

“Like finding a solution to any problem, we have to look at the symptoms first and identify the causes before we can even go about finding a cure or solution.

“Culture mapping, a great corporate training tool, will help to do this.

“Mapping is a great term for it as it will show you how your company culture reached its current point and then you get to plot the direction for its future.”

Kropacsy said it was important to understand what ‘culture’ is in the context of workplaces before embarking on culture mapping.

“Many people answer with the ‘feeling’, the ‘atmosphere’ or the ‘vibe’ amongst staff, and they would be right,” she said.

“But deeper than this, what causes the feeling, atmosphere or vibe in the workplace are the habits that we form as a group - our collective behaviour.

“Any behaviour that is enabled or rewarded consistently over time will become a habit. Collective habits across a group will create the culture.”

According to Kropacsy, collective habits can be both good and detrimental for an organisation.

“If some staff continually arrive late for work without repercussion, then you will likely see that behaviour continue and increase amongst other staff.

“When it happens consistently, it becomes engrained in the “it’s how we do things around here” attitude amongst team members.

“Conversely, staff performing good, industrious and empowering deeds consistently and regularly will contribute to a positive culture.”

Kropacsy saidgiven culture has a significant impact on the overall performance of a company, tools like culture mapping are extremely valuable.

“Culture mapping is fast, insightful and can be ‘game changing’,” she said.

“It has the potential to identify who the real innovators in your team are and where they may be disconnected from decision makers.

“It can identify outstanding issues which appeared to have been resolved from a management perspective but are still simmering away.

“It can specify the factors that contribute to an erosion of trust within your organisation.

“It can highlight the processes, team activities and corporate events that staff are invested in and passionate about.

“It can produce a pathway to a positive team culture and ultimate corporate success.”
