Relax and repeat. Perform this exercise several times and you will feel in your gut that you have gotten a good workout!

 
The gluteus pinch. It may seem funny to include an exercise for the gluteus maximus in a list of the best abdominal exercises, but you see, the various parts of the bodily organism work together. Just as strengthening your abdominal muscles can alleviate lower back pain, so can exercising your lower back or buttocks help tone your abdominals. In this exercise, you simply pinch your buttocks together as tightly as possible. Relax and repeat.

Situps. Yes, this exercise does work the hip flexors to some degree, but it also helps you reach the abdominals in a way that other exercises may miss. This should be included on any list of the best abdominal exercises.

Crunches. A way of working abdominals without bringing the hip flexors into play, though you may not work your abdominals through the full range of motion with this one.

Hanging leg raises. You hang from a chin up bar and slowly raise your legs together to a right angle from your body. You may wear ankle weights to increase the resistance.

Roman chair situps. You sit on a stool, hands clasped behind your head, feet clamped under a piece of furniture, and lean all the way back until your head almost touches the floor. Bring yourself back up to the starting position and repeat. A potent exercise but not for beginners.

Various floor exercises. Most of these take the position of lying on your back, hands at your sides, legs together. You alternately draw your legs up and lower them back down again. One variation is to bend your legs at the knee as you bring each up, while in another you keep your legs straight. Another variation is to bring both legs up together until they are pointing towards the ceiling, while in the flutter kick you raise each foot only a few inches off the floor. These are all excellent variations to work different sets of abdominal muscles and add variation to your workout.
