Five Tips to Prepare You for Urban Emergencies

Our memories will forever be scarred by the unfortunate 9/11 tragedy.

Study the area you live in and find out the possible types of urban emergencies that may affect your area. If you're living in coastal areas, you must be prepared for hurricanes and tornadoes. If you're near the forest, be prepared for wildfires.Make sure that you have a basic emergency kit in tow at all times. A basic emergency kit consists of non-perishable food and water supply that will last for at least three days, a sleeping bag (the number of which will depend on the number of the members of your family), a flashlight, a first aid kit, and some cash.

It is also important to add a battery-operated radio so that you will be informed when it is safe for you to get out just in case you encounter a shortage in your supplies. A dust mask is also a must in anticipation of air contaminants that come with the emergency that you will have to face.Prepare a family emergency plan and discuss this with your family members. Also make sure that you have a communication device such as a mobile phone that you can use to contact people from the outside. Pick one place that you and your family members can meet just in case one of you breaks away from your group. In connection with this, ask your children's school for their emergency plan.

Be updated about the shelters that are located in your area. There may be some instances when the shelter nearest to you is already full so it is important that you know of other shelters that you can easily go to in times of emergency.Keep your contacts updated. Keep the contact numbers of your friends and immediate relatives. These people would want to know your condition while weathering whatever urban emergency you may encounter. They can also aid in the evacuation of your family if they are in a place that is not affected by the emergency that you have to face.

In these uncertain times, we simply can't predict the things that are going to happen to us. So it's always better to be prepared for the things that you may encounter as you go on with your daily lives. Being prepared for all types of emergencies will save you not only money that will otherwise be spent on hospitalization, but it will also give you the peace of mind you constantly seek.
