Ways of Preventing Colon Cancer

Dr. James Mackey highlights the various ways of preventing colon cancer.

Southlake, TX – October 16, 2019– A lot of patients live with a history of colon cancer. Not many people pay attention to colon cancer like they do other high profile cancers. That is why it remains second when it comes to cancer mortality rates. Only 65% of people get diagnosed for colorectal cancer in the United States.

“Colorectal cancer can be prevented,” explained Dr. Mackay. “There are prevention strategies that can help you overcome the disease. Many risks of colon cancer can be avoided by some things patients can do."

Here are some of the prevention tips for lowering your colorectal cancer risk:

• Screening – Getting screened for colon cancer regularly is one of the ways you can prevent the disease. Screening helps to catch cancer early while it is treatable. Doctors will be able to identify polyps and remove them before they turn into cancer. There are various screening tests for colorectal cancer which can be administered according to your medical history and preferences. They include fecal occult blood tests, colonoscopy, and flexible sigmoidoscopy, among others.

• Get adequate vitamins, calcium, and minerals – Evidence has shown that consuming enough calcium, vitamin D, and multivitamin with folate can help protect the body against colon cancer. Daily intake of multivitamin with folate can lower the risk of developing the disease.

• Quit smoking and consume alcohol in moderation – Quitting smoking will not only help you reduce the risk of colon cancer but other serious diseases like stroke, heart disease, and emphysema as well. When taking alcohol, drink in moderation to lower any risks of the disease.

"There so much you can do to prevent colon cancer," continued Dr. Mackay. “Maintaining healthy weight, limiting red and processed meat as well as exercising can help a lot in protecting yourself against the disease. The preventive measures above can help you avoid the risks and enjoy your health.”
