The founder and lead surgeon of Choice Cancer Care talks about lifestyle changes that lower breast cancer risks.

Irving, TX, May 15, 2017 — With an estimated 252,000 American women likely to receive a diagnosis of invasive breast cancer in the coming year, taking steps to reduce risks is a concern for many. While not every case of breast cancer can be prevented, there are measures that can have a very positive effect in lowering risks.

“Very simple lifestyle changes can dramatically lower some women’s risks for developing breast cancer,” explains Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at Choice Cancer Care. “In general, making smart lifestyle decisions can lessen or eliminate changeable risk factors for this disease while having the potential to improve overall health in the process.”

Breast cancer has a long list of factors that may increase a woman’s risk for developing the disease. Although women cannot change factors, such as family history and genetics, they can have an impact by:

• Addressing obesity – Obesity is strongly linked to increased breast cancer risks, along with a host of other serious health conditions. Bringing weight into a healthy range lowers cancer risks along with those for many other conditions.

• Avoiding alcohol overuse – As more research sheds light on the link between alcohol use and breast cancer, it is strongly recommended women limit consumption to very moderate levels. Doing so may lower breast cancer risks while also helping keep weight in check.

• Getting active – Exercise is an excellent way to help maintain a healthy weight while promoting good general health.

• Eating right – A well-balanced diet rich in vegetables and fruits can help lower risks for many different types of cancer.

• Quitting tobacco use – Strong links between smoking and cancer make giving up the habit and excellent way to lover risks.

Women who wish to find out more about their personal breast cancer risks and what they can do to lower them should talk with their doctors. “There are many positive steps women can take to lower their risks while improving their health in the process,” says Dr. Echt.
