The founder and lead surgeon of Choice Cancer Care talks about living healthy after colon cancer.

Irving, TX, June 16, 2017 — With more than 15.5 million Americans now living beyond a diagnosis of cancer, researchers are focusing attention on helping them do so in ways that promote a higher quality of life and longer life expectancy. One recent study cast light on the steps colon cancer survivors may want to incorporate into their routines to promote longevity.

The study in question looked at nearly 1,000 stage 3 colon cancer patients. These patients were followed closely for about seven years after undergoing treatment. Researchers found that patients who more closely followed the American Cancer Society’s guidelines for healthy living were 42 percent less likely to die than survivors who failed to heed the advice.

“The study shows that it’s never too late to adopt healthy habits,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at Choice Cancer Care. “Colon cancer survivors who more or less subscribed to a healthy lifestyle following treatments were less likely to die and they were less likely to see their cancer recur. Since the guidelines also promote overall good health, the effects of adopting them can have many more positive impacts for survivors, as well.”

The guidelines researchers suggest can make a different in life after colon cancer treatment call for taking these actions:

• Making sure to maintain a healthy weight – People who are overweight or obese are urged to lose weight to promote overall better health while lowing risks for some cancers dramatically. Doing so may also protect against type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease, among other conditions.
• Eating a healthy diet – A balanced diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables is strongly recommended for maintaining health. Lean protein, limiting processed food intake and avoiding high-fat items is also suggested.
• Working exercise into the routine – Getting and staying fit can help promote better health overall. It’s suggested that people exercise moderately for at least 150 minutes a week.

“It is possible for colon cancer survivors to live longer, healthier lives after treatment,” says Dr. Echt. “For more personalized guidance, it’s best to consult with a healthcare provider post-treatment.”
