Choice Cancer Care explains the various lung biopsy procedures.

Decatur, TX – June 29, 2020 – Lung biopsy procedures include removing tissue samples of the lung for examination to determine if lung cancer is present. The tissue samples can be removed during surgery or using a special biopsy needle. Lung biopsies can be performed in an open or closed method. Open methods are performed in the operating room, while closed methods are carried out through the skin or trachea.

“A lung biopsy helps to diagnose lung cancer or find out the reason behind fluid buildup in the lungs, said Choice Cancer Care. “The type of lung biopsy recommended by your doctor depends on various factors. Discussing your condition with your doctor can help you understand and prepare for the procedure.”

Here are the various lung biopsy procedures;

• Needle biopsy – A lung needle biopsy is performed when doctors cant reach your cells using a bronchoscopy. During the procedure, you'll be given a local anesthetic, and the doctor will place a needle through your chest to take a tissue sample from the outer area of your lungs. The procedure is guided by a CT scan or fluoroscopy.

• Transbronchial biopsy – Also known as bronchoscopy, this biopsy procedure is performed through a fiberoptic bronchoscope through the lungs' main airways. A camera and light are used to guide the bronchoscope that collects cells from the lung. An x-ray may be performed before the procedure to identify the spot where the biopsy will be performed.

• Thoracoscopic lung biopsy – This biopsy procedure is performed under general anesthetic. It's also called video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, which is carried out to check for any problems on the outer side of your lungs. A thoracoscopic biopsy can also be used to perform therapeutic procedures such as removing nodules or other tissue lesions.

Your doctor will recommend lung biopsy testing when they find abnormalities in your chest that may indicate lung cancer. The results of your biopsy can help stage your cancer and administer treatment before it spreads to other organs in the body.
