Decatur, TX – Each cancer typerequires specific treatment to combat it. Patients may come in with many expectations, but it is only after the doctor has carried out proper tests that the course of action can be determined. This course of action will be the type of cancer therapy to be used. It starts out with a primary form of treatment such as surgery meant to remove the cancerous tumor. If there is a high chance of cancer recurrence doctors are likely to recommend follow-up treatment known as adjuvant cancer therapy.
“Every cancer case is different because the patients have different bodies. Their vitals vary and some have other underlying conditions that may complicate the treatment process,” explains Dr. Echt.“Thankfully there are several interventions available to patients, making the treatment process an option for every patient.”
Cancer therapy can be classified into two broad categories. They include:
• Local adjuvant cancer therapy – This therapy specifically targets cancer cells that may have remained behind after a tumor has been removed. It involves the use of radiation treatment where the radiation is directly delivered to the areas around the place the tumor was or in the tumor cavity. It is usually done about three to six weeks after surgery. Doctors recommend it for breast cancer patients whose tumor had spread through the chest wall muscles or several lymph nodes, a tumor that was more than two inches, if they were diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer, and if they had a lumpectomy and not a mastectomy.
• Systemic adjuvant therapy – This treatment is directed at the whole body to destroy any cancer cells that surgery and other treatments may have missed.
“The choice of follow-up therapy will depend on a doctor’s assessment of the patient’s condition,” says Dr. Echt.“Patients should trust their professional knowledge and experience so as to get the best results.”
