Irving, TX, – It’s already well-documented that routine exercise can help prevent heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and a host of other potentially life-limiting conditions. It seems it may also lower a man’s risk of dying from prostate cancer should the disease develop. That’s according to a new study that found men who actively exercised after diagnosis could lower their mortality risks by as much as 37 percent.

The study that found a new benefit for exercise involved more than 7,000 men diagnosed with prostate cancer. Researchers ultimately found that men who actively exercised were at an overall lower risk for mortality from prostate cancer than their counterparts who were not physically active. Moderate exercise, researchers say, lowered mortality risks by 31 percent. Men who exercised vigorously on a routine basis saw their risk drop by 37 percent.

“The role routine exercise plays may also extend to how prostate cancer presents in men,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute. “Researchers discovered men who reported exercising regularly prior to diagnosis were more likely to have low-risk tumors.”

While researchers didn’t delve into the whys behind exercise’s benefits, the findings made it quite clear that being active before and after diagnosis can help improve the odds of enjoying a positive outcome. For the estimated 161,000 American men likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the coming year, the findings may help motivate them and their doctors to action.

“More research may be required to back the findings of this particular study, but it’s already clear routine exercise has positive impacts on health overall,” says Dr. Echt. “With that in mind, it is strongly recommended men who don’t already exercise take steps to become more active. Personal healthcare providers can provide guidance and suggestions for getting started.”
