Innovation & Smart Technology to Make its Way into the Global Pharmaceutical Packaging Market

Rise in health and environment awareness, technological advancements, and quest for eco-friendly & sustainable packaging have contributed to high demand in the global pharmaceutical packaging industry. The trend of packaging of pharmaceuticals is moving toward smart technologies to address issues such as patient safety and counterfeit drugs. Market players are adopting smart technologies to deliver value to consumers. Smart packaging involves two types, active and intelligent. Active packaging involves improvement in products, while intelligent packaging involves collection of data and interaction with users.

There are two primary objectives for introduction of smart technology in pharmaceutical packaging. First is to ensure patient safety and another is to tackle counterfeiting. The legislation and regulations are constantly changing as new breakthroughs are made and new technologies evolve. With commercialization of biotechnology-based drugs and drugs with high moisture sensitivity, smart packaging is necessary. Moreover, smart packaging will provide information regarding expiration dates, number of dosage, and composition. Innovations and increase in research & development activities would roll down the costs in coming years. The role of smart packaging will become significant to add value to consumers and drive growth for market players.

Smart packaging will also help to tackle the most hazardous threat to lives of patients, which is counterfeit drugs. The rise in online trade where drugs are bought without prescription and cheaply is contributing mainly to increase prevalence of counterfeit drugs. To counter this problem, microtext has been implemented. Words are printed on packaging at a point and it is unnoticeable to naked eye without magnification. This would help in determining authenticity of drugs and reduce the counterfeit drugs being sold easily in the market. The print and packaging in pharmaceutical would continue to innovate to prevent illegal manufacturers from causing damage and grabbing stronghold in the industry. Furthermore, smart packaging also play a vital part in keeping pills in optimal environmental conditions, reminders of time at which pills to be taken, and protection again counterfeit drugs.

In another news regarding pharmaceutical packaging, a substance has been found which is said to be a game changer. Conventionally, in cold formed pharma packaging industry, BOPA (BON) and PVC films are used. Its alu–alu blister laminate consists of three layers, 25 micron BOPA, 60 micron PVC, and 60 micron soft aluminium foil. Elimination of BOPA and PVC films in the alu-alu laminate blister pack for pharmaceuticals has become an intricate task for experts.

A special polyester film by Uflex will replace top and bottom substrates of the conventional alu–alu laminate. A whole new structure will consist of 50 micron soft aluminium foil, 36 micron special polyester, and 36 micron special polyester. This specialty film will be laminated on both the sides of the aluminium foil without posing any difficulty. The innovation would drive the global industry.
