Future of Abortion Rights Look Dismal as Effect of Trump Transition

with Trump officially becoming the president next week, the anti-choice advocates have fueled their efforts to overthrow Roe vs. Wade.

The political contestation regarding abortion is already heating up. With Donald Trump as the president elect of the USA and the conservative Congress, the battle to keep abortion restricted has gained traction.

At the top of these efforts is the one to overturn the landmark decision of Roe vs. Wade ruling that legalized pregnancy termination. Additionally there are other conservative efforts that would limit access to all abortive services in all 50’s states, as per activists. Regardless to say, future of abortion rights in America looks dismal for at least the next several years.

Made legal in the US in 1973, abortion has always been a sensitive and deeply divisive political, social, and legal issue. Trump has not only stated that pregnancy termination should largely be banned, but he also claimed that once he sat on the presidential throne he would appoint an anti-abortion justice to the state court in expectation that it would result in the overturning of the Roe vs. Wade ruling.

Reproductive rights care center react
One of the senior council of the care for reproductive rights center responded that the statement given by the president elect was worrying, as it totally ignores and takes away women’s fundamental human rights to make a decision regarding her own reproductive decisions.

While on the other hand, pro-life advocate and president of a conservative foundation commented that there was going to be “friendly” Supreme Court in the next few years.

Horde of restrictive bills passed
A wave of anti-abortion laws have been passed since the controversial win, this includes the two cases, both in Southern states that will challenge Roe vs. Wade. While there is another one in Arkansas which requires clinics administering abortion pills to specifically contract with a doctor who has admitting authorization at the hospital within 30 miles. Meanwhile admitting rights are formal affiliations that are difficult to obtain.

While advocates state that these laws are for ‘women’s safety’, others concur that they are unnecessary and restrictive.

New appointments
While the Supreme Court overturned the restrictive Texan abortive laws, a decision that hailed by the pro-choice advocates; the court has now vacant seats that he can fulfill. Furthermore he can make further appointments, as all the three justices are 78 years of age or older.
If the Supreme Court justices that extremely oppose abortion are appointed, then it is more likely that the Roe vs. Wade could be overturned, commented the head of the country’s leading health and service research institute.

However till then, the pro-life advocates have already introduced smaller measures in the Congress or in the states which is majorly controlled by anti-choice republicans. Some states have even passed the heartbeat bill that if passed can criminalize pregnancy termination which can be detected as early as six weeks of conception.

Meanwhile there are other states that are banning 20 weeks pregnancy termination, without exception to incest and rape cases. These legislations are a part of a bigger plan which are to lead up to a case big enough to overthrow Roe vs. Wade completely.
