The Athlete’s Paradox

It is typically a safe assumption that healthy people are generally healthy throughout their body. In this age of open communication and information, leaving one area of your health neglected is uncommon. However, a small subset of the population has bucked this trend.

Athletes today must demonstrate an extreme level of fitness to maintain their position. They must exercise frequently, practice a very disciplined diet, and avoid most vices. Imagine the surprise, then, when researchers found that a large number of athletes surveyed – nearly 50% - exhibited poor oral health. Upwards of 77% exhibited poor gum health. For a group as health-conscious as this one, this was unexpected.

The reasons for it have been speculated upon, but not confirmed. Athletes, drawing breathe over their teeth during training sessions, might have an overall drier mouth than their less-active counterparts, leading to a more alkaline state, which has been linked to more cavities. A diet high in carbohydrates, which break down in to sugars over time, could contribute to cavities and sub-optimal gum health.

The research will continue. But for those of us who love the challenge of a good, long run or a lengthy bike ride, it is worth being mindful of our teeth.
